Soapstone

Soapstone — the surface that doesn't etch.

Chemically inert, so lemon, wine and vinegar do nothing to it. That is why it has been the bench in school and pharmaceutical chemistry labs for over a century, and why people who love the look of marble but not the maintenance end up here instead.

It never needs sealing because nothing soaks in. Heat doesn't bother it — a pan straight off the burner is fine. Many owners oil it to deepen the colour, but that is cosmetic rather than protective.

The trade-off is honest: soapstone is soft. It marks, and it darkens with age. Scratches sand out with fine paper. If you want a surface that still looks new in ten years, buy quartz. If you want one that looks lived in, this is the material.

Alberene, quarried in Schuyler, Virginia since 1883, is the only soapstone quarried in America. The rest comes from the Mariana region of Brazil.

Heavy at roughly 17.7 lb per square foot at 3CM. Call or text (940) 398-5589 with your ZIP for a delivered price.
